The Special Olympics cross-country skiing competitions for people with disabilities take place one week after the International Gommerlauf.
On Sunday, 2 March 2025, athletes from all over Switzerland will compete against each other over distances of 500 meters, 1, 3 and 6 kilometers at the Nordic Centre in Ulrichen. In the morning, the group divisions for the finals will be determined in qualifying races.
In order to offer the Special Olympics athletes optimal competition conditions, three different three-lane classic cross-country ski trails will be set up for the various distances. The Nordic Center in Ulrichen offers an ideal cross-country skiing area with the best infrastructure.
Obergoms Tourism and the organizers of the Special Olympics Gommerlauf are hoping for as many cross-country skiers as possible from disabled sports groups throughout Switzerland.
The Upper Valais Disabled Sports Association organizes cross-country training for its athletes every Saturday on the Goms cross-country ski trails. A wide variety of training methods are used, with the emphasis on having fun while exercising. Some members of the BSOW have international competition experience, having already competed twice at the Special Olympics World Winter Games, in Idaho (USA) in 2009 and in Schladming (Austria) in 2017.
