The Ritzinger Field Chapel
Ritzingen is a part of the old Grafschaft. However, you will be familiar first and foremost with a large chapel that stands alone in the midst of lush meadows and is probably the most popular photo subject in Goms: the pilgrimage chapel "Unsere liebe Frau auf dem Ritzingerfeld". First traces of the building point to the time around 1450. The chapel received its present form between 1600-1650. In former times, craftsmen lived in every village who made shingles for the typical Valais wooden roofs from large larch blocks in sweaty manual labor. Today, this craft is practiced in the Goms almost exclusively in an old workshop in Ritzingen. A look over the shoulder of the craft is worthwhile.
