The stony village in Goms
In former times, Obergesteln was called Castellione (1322) or Obergestillen (1415), which refers to earlier fortifications. The first thing you will notice is that the mountain village is not built of larch wood but almost exclusively of stone - almost unique in the Upper Valais. After the fire of 1868, which almost completely destroyed the village, the Valais government allowed a reconstruction only in stone. In the Middle Ages, Obergesteln was an important customs post on the way from Bern to Upper Italy. Today, many guests stay here who appreciate the golf course and want to get away from it all in the tranquility of the Goms.
