The small chapel, which lies above Oberwald on the way to Gletsch, looks down into the valley from a rocky head. The rectangular, choirless building appears very simple. The altar dates from the last quarter of the 18th century. The altarpiece, St. Nicholas of Myra, is the work of Ludwig Werlen from Geschinen.

St. Nicholas Chapel in Elmi
After the Lengis landslide in 1717, which is said to have buried the three villages of Elmi, Braten and Schibochten, the three communities of Oberwald, Unterwassern and Obergesteln rebuilt the chapel, which was first mentioned in 1610, as a community project.
